Dhow builder

Jadaf is the main boat building area of Dubai and home to the original dhow building yard. A dhow is a traditional Arab sailing vessel with one or more lateen sails. Construction of them in the region is now a fading art, construction of more modern boats costs less and can be done quicker. Even to the present day, dhows make commercial journeys between the Persian Gulf and Dubai, you can see them at the side of the Creek, loading onboard anything from dates, to television sets to mopeds. There’s a few of them being built today if you take a visit to Jadaf, this image was actually shot in a smaller dhow building yard, just off the beach near to the Burj Al Arab hotel, Jumeirah, I suspect it has been there since the days when it was called Chicago Beach, unfazed by the rapid development around it including the worlds most luxurious hotel, a couple of minutes down the road, all the craftsmen were still working late into the night.
