Quiet moment in Bastakiya

Bastakiya, one of the oldest and most beautiful parts of the city at the side of the Creek. One of the few areas of Dubai where you can still see original wind towers. It is quiet and peaceful. A little oasis at the side of the Creek, but away from the hustle and bustle of the dhows and abras. Home to great places to visit like the wonderful Sheikh Mohamed Centre for Cultural Understanding or the coin museum or the Majlis Art Gallery. Foolishly, i tried to snap this without asking, which is why before editing it looks so bad, as I was rushing, once my presence was discovered the elderly Arab gentleman, quickly smiled and gestured that it’s no problem to shoot. So many people ask me ‘what/where is Bastakiya’ and SO many people are missing a good thing. Rumour has it that in his visit of around 1972 our very own Prince Charles was visiting the area with Sheikh Mohammed and he was being told of the plans to knock the whole scruffy area down to rebuild it and Prince Charles seriously advised against it, which is why we can still visit it today. When Dubai was growing, the area was very busy with traders from Iran and India and Pakistan. One of my favourite places in Dubai.
