Jumeirah Beach Hotel – beach dinner tent

We were tasked with capturing a difficult sunset shot – the romantic dinner tent at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel beach, facing the world’s most iconic hotel – the Burj Al Arab. This shot has been done before by Jumeirah, so we had some reference, nevertheless the image was not without its challenges, namely – the heat, Summer is beginning, which can mean plain skies and bad visibility, unwanted elements in the image – hotel guests / sunbeds / umbrellas / lifeguards on the beach, power – we needed electricity and even our 50ft extension was not enough, the lights on the exterior of the Burj Al Arab, the position and rotation of the tent, the shot itself – how do we capture the beach, the sunset, the tent and the Burj Al Arab together perfectly at sunset, whilst also not letting the dinner tent be too small in the frame, or not the main focus.

Photography is 99% preparation. Experience is a great leveller also, we are in and out of 5 star hotels shooting every day in Dubai. Most of the challenges were tackled one at a time. We did a site visit prior to the shoot to get clarity on a few things, on the day we arrived giving ourselves 4hrs for the shot. We moved any obstacles that could be moved, always better to do this rather than retouch, we checked, double checked and triple checked the position and angle of the tent, and gained approval on-site from the client, always helpful – Engineering asked us what colour and what time we’d like the Burj Al Arab lights to be on and helped with power coverage, Sreejith who was providing F&B and helping with logistics from Jumeirah was super helpful with each request we had.

The sun set and we captured the images we needed to make the shot. Have a look – some images here where we were testing positions and angles and the finished image above, let us know what you think.
